Hey guys! Back from out of town and need to seriously catch up on all the speed paintings.
Here is the photo of the day for Wednesday.
Finishing up my Society of Illustrators submission is going to take a lot of my time this week so, I'll post when I can.
Happy painting!

1-7-12 late post
Again, didn't reference a color palette on speed painting. Tried to keep everything pretty warm. I think I spent too long on getting my shapes right before going to edges.
1-6-12 late speed painting
Trying to test my color sense with this speed painting, I did not reference any color palette. Ended up
struggling a lot with it, went back on what I already blocked in several times and tried to apply a tutorial from Dice's blog.
I also really struggled with seeing correctly like Dice stresses.
I really need to simplify my stuff down.
The story I got from the photo was that when the woman is putting on her make up things are more ideal. So, I pushed the saturation in the color palette of the reflection.
1-9-12 late photo reference to paint from
It's all about capturing form baby!
(subject matter of this week... horses if you have guessed already)
late photo reference update..
Hey Guys,
Super sorry about disappearing for a couple of days. I've been away from art in general and it was a nice break. Now, back to it! And with a more focused view on what I am trying to achieve with each painting.
This photo is the last of the B&W turn into color. Have fun with it!

This is the first time i painted a black and white photo in color. I used a Sargent painting. It was pretty hard.

grr my brain
Tried using a new brush on this painting based on Pepe's crits. At first I was trying to capture the feeling of the moment with the brush strokes. Hence using a brush that is angle sensitive.
But then I thought, what does that mean? Feeling of the moment.
I feel lost in what I'm doing. I'm trying to first find a palette of colors that works for the story/feeling I get from the photo, then I block the painting in with those color relationships and value in mind. But then, edges start bumbarding my brain and I just get overwhelmed. Which just makes me bounce back and forth around the painting fixing this, adjust the shape on that....
I don't man. My brain is just spinning here.

Jazzy
Had a lot of fun going crazy with these colors.
The palette comes from a James Gurney Dinotopia painting.
Semi almost caught up part 2...
No where near as awesome as Pepe's rendering of this photo. But I'm starting to remember how to squint while painting again. Pallette is from a Jean-Leon Gerome painting.
Semi Sorta not yet caught up...
I got super caught up in all the negative/positive shapes in this painting.
Palette comes from a James Gurney painting. He's a beast.

Still catching up part 2..
I'm starting to realize how much you can let go in a painting in regards to how rendered everything has to be. So long as your values are right and your focal point is tight, you're off to a good start.
Jan, 2nd reference photo
When I was photo hunting on Corbis, I found a bunch of Music related images. They're super cool and I wanted to share them with you guys. Here is the first of a few to come.
I'm also really liking this 'adapt a color palette thing and making the values work' method to our 1 hour speed paintings.
Lets keep it up!
3rd of many I need to catch on...
I looked at the reference photo and just felt the colors Red, White, and Blue. Following that viegn I found a painting that Jean-Leon Gerome did that had colors I felt fit.
2nd of many soon coming..
I got the colors for this painting from a James Gurney painting. On a personal note, I really enjoyed this study and the colors from the painting I referenced.
